What is Royal Arch Masonry?

Royal Arch Masonry is often the very first step a Master Mason takes when exploring the York Rite.

Within the Chapter, several fascinating degrees are conferred. The Mark Master Mason degree builds upon the Fellow Craft’s second degree, offering further lessons and symbolism. In some places, this degree is even presented within a Fellow Craft Lodge, under the Blue Lodge’s second degree.

Next comes the Past Master (Virtual) degree. Traditionally, only Past Masters of a Blue Lodge could advance into the Holy Royal Arch. Since so many Masons are eager to take this journey, the Virtual Past Master degree was created to prepare and qualify them. Much of its content mirrors the ceremonies used to install a Worshipful Master. It’s worth noting that this particular requirement doesn’t apply outside the United States.

In the Most Excellent Master degree, the story of King Solomon’s Temple—so central to Blue Lodge Masonry—reaches its triumphant conclusion. In England, this degree, along with three others, is conferred by the Cryptic Councils instead of the Chapter.

Finally, there is the Royal Arch Mason degree, which many consider the most beautiful and inspiring degree in all of Freemasonry. Although a major convocation of the Supreme Grand Chapter in England in 2004 introduced some differences in ritual compared to the American version, the spirit of fraternal friendship remains unchanged.

Once a Mason completes this degree, he can choose to continue into Cryptic Masonry or proceed directly to the Knights Templar, depending on the regulations of his jurisdiction.
